Andernos-les-Bains is a town of over 12,000 inhabitants that is bustling all year round, with a cinema, an indoor public swimming pool, a skate park, a multi-purpose sports ground, several children’s play areas, a climbing centre, a laser tag centre… You can stroll along the pedestrianised street to do some shopping, enjoy an ice cream or a crêpe, take a walk along the jetty (the longest in France, offering a unique view of the Arcachon Basin, the Tchanquées huts, the Île aux Oiseaux, and more) or sample oysters at one of the many tasting spots in the harbour.
The Quinconces nature reserve is also well worth a visit to discover the flora and fauna of the Arcachon Basin and take a stroll as far as Arès.
Not to mention the Domaine de Certes (Audenge), the Teich bird sanctuary, Aqualand (Gujan Mestas), the Coccinelle Park and Kid Parc (Gujan Mestas).
Just an hour’s drive south, you simply cannot visit the Arcachon Bay without exploring Arcachon and the ‘Winter Town’, then climbing the Dune du Pilat.
Just 40 minutes to the north, you can explore the Cap Ferret Peninsula, its 10 villages, its oyster ports, the Cap Ferret lighthouse, the panoramic view from the tip of Cap Ferret, the ice creams at Frédhélian, the Bélisaire jetty, the little train…
The extensive network of cycle paths in the Gironde will allow you to cycle around the bay, reach the Atlantic beaches, Cap Ferret or even Arcachon for the more ambitious.
UBA ferry services run between Andernos and Arcachon and between Cap Ferret and Arcachon.
The Passe Marée also allows you to reach Arcachon by water, even at low tide, but it also offers boat trips around the bay, departing from Andernos.
Around the basin, you’ll find a host of small beaches between Arès and Andernos, but you’ll need to wait for high tide to swim there, except at Lac de Saint Brice (Arès), a small reservoir in the basin where you can swim whatever the tide.
If you’re travelling with children, you’ll love Betey Beach (Andernos), where you can enjoy a children’s play area right on the beach, tuck into ice creams and crêpes at the little beach snack bar, have a picnic in the shade of the pine trees, and go for a swim at high tide.
On the Atlantic coast, Grand Crohot beach is the closest ocean beach to Andernos (about a 20-minute drive), but you’ll find a multitude of beaches—some busier, some quieter, some more accessible, some less so—along the miles of coastline the Atlantic Ocean has to offer.
In summer, Cap 33 offers a wide range of free sporting activities open to everyone (see the programme online).
If you enjoy local markets, here is a list of markets in the area:
Arès Market: every Tuesday morning
Andernos Market: every Friday morning, both open-air and covered (opening times vary by season)
Lège Bourg Market: every Saturday morning.
Cap Ferret Market: every morning from mid-June to mid-September, then on Wednesdays, Saturdays and Sundays for the rest of the year
Market
Piraillan Market: every morning from mid-June to mid-September
You can do your shopping at the supermarkets in Andernos: Intermarché, Netto, Carrefour City, Shopi; or in Arès: Leclerc, Lidl.
In both summer and winter, the area is bustling all year round thanks to local events:
The Arès Oyster Festival on the weekend of 15 August
Cabanes en Fête on the first Saturday in December
The Andernos Jazz Festival at the end of July
Finally, let’s not forget Lacanau, Soulac-sur-Mer, Bordeaux, the Médoc vineyards and their châteaux...
Sun or rain, hot or cold, high tide or low tide, as a couple or with the family... you’ll always find something to do in the Bassin... and you’ll always want to come back!
